Artist's Statement

Inspired by such artists as Monet, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth, Terry patiently fills his paintings with carefully-observed light, shadows, color, and detail. Terry hopes to bring to the viewer the same enchantment he feels for his subjects. He takes hundreds of reference photographs, but he is not interested in copying them. “Artistic license” is paramount when he paints a scene, and sometimes elements from several photos are combined. By adding and subtracting details, he works to create the mood he’s after, which is often peaceful or reflective. He composes the elements in his paintings with care and believes colors should be mixed artfully to suggest the unique lighting and the subtle hues of the scene. Being both a realist and a perfectionist—all of his paintings take many months to complete.
